you only really need to hook up with your key crew maybe one month in advance of the shoot, that way you may get some commitment.

unless you're looking to develop an idea with a DoP or writer or something, in which case work with them say 12 months in advance of the shoot.

play it by ear normally works, but expect 95% of ppl you meet to be lamers or out for the oscar and luvvie lifestyle.

I'm starting pre production on a project that could take up to a year because of other commitmnets, (earning a living etc.), but Im finding it difficult to find a crew, even a tiny one, that is willing to commit so far in advance. I was thinking of just 4 or 5 main crew that have many duties each. Then I got to thinking about you lot. So how big a crew do you all work with? Do you have a core of a few people and bring in others when needed? Or do you have a large crew from the start? Im not talking about the actors just crew.
